FIVE JOURNAL PROMPTS TO GET YOU THINKING CREATIVELY

Journaling doesn't always mean writing about what you did that day. You can use your journal as a creative outlet by utilising the space as a way to practise longform writing styles without the pressure of having to show it to anyone else.

Use these prompts as a jumping off point to create more of your own. or maybe come back to these and various intervals so see how your opinions (and writing style) shift with time.

1. What is your favourite time of day?

It could be a time period that happens every day, a particular time each week, or maybe it’s a very specific time that only happens every so often - like on holiday. Try to really explain why you love it so much, all those little details - the sounds, the smells, what you're doing, who you're with.

2. What fictional character would you most like to meet, and why?

What questions would you like to ask them? Would you meet in the real world or in their world? How do you think they would respond?

3. What's something you are excited about at the moment?

Get really specific, why are you excited? Is it an activity, a particular day, a big event, an amazing outfit you have planned?

4. What biscuit do you most identify with?

It might be that you really love that biscuit, or maybe there’s something about the characteristics of the biscuit that you think represent you. Get really descriptive, and maybe even do a little doodle of it.

5. Turn your favourite day of the year so far into a story.

Write about the day in the third person, include dialogue and map out the environment. Try to describe sensory elements like what you see, hear, smell and feel. Maybe you can try to create a beginning, middle and end, or a setup, conflict and resolution.

Journaling can be used as a space to get deep and emotional, but it doesn't have to be! Give that cat you stopped to stroke in the street a backstory, turn your day into a comic strip, write a review of your latest reality TV obsession.

Happy journaling!
